We are about to celebrate the 54th Earth Day in the US. This photograph from the Apollo 8 human-crewed spacecraft, currently on view in the Main Gallery in “New Geographies,” captures the first moment human eyes ever saw the earth rising over the moon's surface!

The first Earth Day was April 22, 1970. During that decade, under President Nixon (R), the federal government established the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. That decade was also significant in Marin.

We thank visionary leaders and tireless activists as we enjoy coastal Marin’s wild beauty and public access to beaches, trails, and parks. Today, Marin County is two-thirds parks, open space, and agricultural land! On Marin’s coast, grassroots activists in the 1960s stopped the county supervisor’s plan for massive coastal development accessed by a four-lane freeway. Point Reyes peninsula became protected as a National Seashore, and the Bolinas Lagoon was saved from being a commercial yacht harbor.

Other successes in the 1970s include stopping Gulf Oil’s planned city on Marin Headlands and establishing the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Logging redwoods in Olema Valley and local whaling were stopped. Environmental Forum began educating advocates. In Bolinas, young counter-culture residents stopped an oversized sewage treatment plant with an organic alternative and implemented a water moratorium. A Bolinas farmer led the modern organic farming movement. Later, the Marin Agricultural Land Trust was the nation’s first trust to protect agricultural land, coastal dairies turned organic, and the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary was established to protect local coastal waters.

Our environmental victories are not permanent. Activism requires constant vigilance to protect this precious living legacy. As we celebrate Earth Day, let us do so with determination, gratitude, and a renewed commitment.
